I’m Not Really Long In The Tooth – What Bunk

I remember well that once I hit 40, I was made to feel like I was starting to get a little ‘long in the tooth’. I personally didn’t feel like that, but it was what I was reading in all the fashion mags of the day and hearing on television. It was generally what society had scripted for me and my cohort. All around me all I could see were very carefully crafted ads and images of the perfect woman. She was beautifully dressed and made up with a perfect body and she was no older than mid 20’s. That, it seems was and is, society’s view of womanhood. What BUNK. In the intervening 25 years I know my body has aged and my mind has gained a treasure trove of wisdom and I love where my life is at today.

Let’s Celebrate The Older Woman

What I don’t get is why women are not celebrated from the age of 40. That is a big milestone in a feminine life and as we age, we just seem to get better and better BUT where is the acknowledgement?

Sure, I get that as we age women take on a new look, with our bodies changing in ways that are often beyond our control. I think that is OK and worth celebrating. What is not OK is when women feel so marginalised by these very natural changes that they give up and start losing their zest for life. It takes true grit to stay in shape both mentally and physically as we age and if we feel we look abysmal then that makes the task seem all the more impossible. Think about it, if we feel as a cohort, we look fantastic and are confident OWNING OUR AGE, then I believe society will start to take notice and over time a real shift will happen in the general psyche.
